Description

ANYONE ON LOCATION? LOCAL JOURNALISM AT THE CROSSROADS OF INNOVATION, SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE AND PUBLIC FUNDING.

Short thesis:
In more and more regions of Germany, there is only one daily newspaper left, and the concentration in local broadcasting is also increasing. For a brief period, hyper-local blogs appeared to be an alternative, but in most cases financing remains difficult. In order to maintain local diversity, different concepts for the further development and funding of local journalism are under discussion and are also being tested in select German states.

Description:
Picking up on the current debate and situation regarding local journalism, various questions are being asked and discussed in the context of MCB17: What importance does local journalism have for society? Is local journalism a discontinued model that only is good as a hobby now? How can local diversity and reporting be ensured? Are there models that work, or does the state have to provide support? Which funding models are available and what can they each achieve?

But in addition to the possible funding options, the question also is: What does local journalism have to do to be more attractive to readers and journalists? Is local journalism lacking in ideas, innovative formats, and platforms that could distribute these? Should funding models focus rather on the ability to innovate than on support that is purely financial?

With an impulse presentation, Professor Dr. Frank Lobigs will provide an introduction to the topic. The subsequent exchange will be facilitated by the vice president of the German Federation of Journalists regional department NRW Andrea Hansen.
